Yesterday I recorded the “siren voices” for Jumping Ship – sung so wonderfully by Gabi Frödén, better known by her musical persona Foreign Slippers. Leo Abrahams kindly let us use his calm, airy studio to record in, and it was a rather nice afternoon after tucking into our Italian lunch up the road. I love Gabi and her husband Phil – I always seem to spend my time giggling like some idiot schoolgirl reading an LOL text when they are around.
So that was great – her voice sounds really amazing on the track.
I love getting the energy of others into the equation. I used to only ever work alone, especially when writing songs, but this collaboration with Maurice has been a much better experience than anything that has gone before. Maybe it’s just because he’s such a good songwriter that I don’t need to think or worry about anything… just do it. Or maybe it is to do with the true magic that the spirit of collaboration brings. And thus it feels completely right to trust others with the music (and design) too.
I woke this-morning to an email from Matt Rudd saying, “do you mind if I take a look at the Ramshackle Crow logo?” Now, he’s rebranded Channel 4 and recently developed that gorgeous new look and feel for ITV… so when he offers to “look at your logo”, it’s not an offer you turn down in a hurry. COME ON!!! Brilliant… I’m very excited to see what he’s considering. A better graphic designer – especially from the underlying thinking part of it – you will not find.
So there you have it – in less than 24 hours I have Gabi and Matt doing their thing on this project, bringing magic we could never have predicted back in the Crawfordsburn Inn last September when Maurice and I agreed to start something.
