This is a digital drum machine, but I don’t care. It can be made to groove and do some seriously interesting stuff. Cameo’s “The Word Up” and the incredible “Sign O’ The Times” by Prince both used it. Its a big old beast, quite fun to program, and I think it looks super-cool in that 80s Yamaha kind of way.
I needed a mighty thump at one point in “More Is Less” and this was the only machine that would do the job. It also provided some grungy snares and rimshots for “Time To Fly”.
I’d quite like to do a bit more work with this machine on the next record… it’s a bit underrated, I reckon.
