I’m burning the midnight oil trying to fix up Jumping Ship. I suddenly realised the new chorus was just not doing it for me either, having been unhappy with the previous one and replaced it.
The verses and bridges have some pretty serious momentum, kicking along as they do at 184bpm (which is damn fast). The choruses (both old and new) had been half time, but with repeated listens it just wasn’t happening. I played Big Lee an alternative version today, and we both agreed that keeping the pace up was a good plan.
Then I tried half-time bridge sections and thought that was working until I realised that in fact it wasn’t either. It was just a case of keeping the same Princey groove going all the way through. So we’re back to the oldest trick in the book – keep it simple, stupid. No half time, no fancy tricks – just keep it moving and enjoy the ride.
It was nice to actually get a proper vocal setup going today for a while. I am using my old trusty Neumann TLM-103 through a TLA voice channel into the Apogee Ensemble, so its perfectly fine for me.
